The town of Barton, or to give it its full name, Barton-upon-Humber, is in north Lincolnshire on the south bank of the Humber Estuary. It is situated 10 kilometres from Hull and 50 kilometres from the county town of Lincoln. In the early part of the 19th century the town held race meetings, the first of which was on Thursday 28th March 1811 when entries had to be made at the George Inn prior to racing. On Tuesday 23rd March 1813 the two race programme opened with the Marconi Hunter Chase over 2 miles, followed by a Sweepstakes confined to gentleman riders. The final meeting took place on Thursday 10th April 1817. |
